Mission #12 - June 29, 1943
LeMans, France
The heavy clouds which had thwarted the efforts of the 8th on the 24th had now dispersed over Europe and a late evening attack was mounted against Luftwaffe activities in this area.
Twenty-one Fortresses climbed into the dusk over Snetterton Heath at 1715. The target was below at 1959 with but one plane having aborted. Captain John T. Ford was pilot of the lead plane. But malfunctions in both the lead and deputy lead aircraft resulted in poor bombing. Strike photos later revealed that in fact no bombs had landed in the vicinity of the target! LeMans, for the second time, had proved itself a difficult target for the 8th.
