Mission #15 - July 24, 1943

        Bergen, Norway

Teletypes chattered demanding that those Fortresses equipped with Tokyo tanks be prepared.  [Editor's Note: Tokyo tanks were internally mounted self-sealing fuel tanks used in B-17's which added significant range capabilities.]  This time the target was to be the harbor-servicing facilities for the German Navy at Bergen, Norway.  The Group took off at 0813.  A/C 42-3288, Green Fury II of the 338th aborted early.  Heavy cloud formations were reported; only brief glimpses of the Baltic could be seen and soon the mission was abandoned.  A/C 42-30130, Klap Trap II, had to jettison its bombs when fire broke out in the No. 2 engine.  All planes returned to base with their bombs.
