Mission #19 - August 12, 1943

           Bonn, Germany

When crews arrived over the primary target, the synthetic oil refineries at Wesselring, there was too much cloud cover.  Therefore, the attack was carried out on the city of Bonn.  General bombing of a city was not popular with the crews but this one was in the industrial Ruhr.  Although there was little fighter opposition, flak was heavy.  The 390th Bomb Group made its first mission with the wing this day and all planes returned safely.

The superstitious were relieved when the 13th passed without a mission because it was Friday the 13th.  The 339th held its squadron party and many a hung-over gunner was delighted to find the 14th passing uneventfully too.
